Ben Slocum was our guest speaker today and he spoke about his venture with Beards Brewery (That's him in the background instead of the foreground). The friendly pooch in the front is Ava, his trusty sidekick. They began their brewery on Howard Street and have built it up substantially since their initial opening in 2012. His partner is Peter Manthei and they have built up an excellent business that is geared towards expansion and being highly sustainable. Today we had Megan DeWindt of Crooked Tree Arts Center  and also Kevin Richardson from the Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Music.

Crooked Tree Arts Center is excited to respond to community requests to grow our music education program.  Why?

#1) We have the physical space.  Thanks to a generous grant in 2016, we have a new 900 square foot music studio space in the CTAC building.

#2) We have a talented staff member, Kevin Richardson, trained to teach stringed instruments.

#3) We have a long-standing tradition of music education through our 4 music performance groups:

  • Concert Orchestra (Students with 2 or more years of strings experience)
  • Chamber Orchestra (High school/college level strings)
  • Symphony Orchestra (High school/college level strings combined with local woodwind, brass and percussion players)
  • Crooked Tree Jazz Orchestra (Intermediate level woodwinds, brass, piano, guitar, bass and drums)

Safe Families for Children is a movement fueled by compassion to keep children safe and families intact. Through Host Families, Family Friends, and Family Coaches, we temporarily host children and provide a network of support to families in crisis while they get back on their feet.

We open our hearts, open our arms, and open our homes.

Clint Cleveland, SFFC Coordinator for Charlevoix and Emmet Counties, provided insight on how this program can bring peace to struggling families in our Northern Michigan communities and explain in detail the ways you and your
church can be involved.

For further information about this wonderful organization you can check out their website at: and you can always join their Facebook page at:

Oceangoing David Kaplan was our speaker today and he spoke about The Lusitania. The Cunard Line launched Lusitania in 1906, at a time of fierce competition for the North Atlantic trade. She made a total of 202 trans-Atlantic crossings. On the afternoon of 7 May, 1915 a German U-boat torpedoed Lusitania, 11 mi (18 km) off the southern coast of Ireland and inside the declared war zone. A second, unexplained, internal explosion sent her to the seabed in 18 minutes, with the deaths of 1,198 passengers and crew. The sinking caused a storm of protest in the United States because 128 American citizens were among the dead. The sinking helped shift public opinion in the United States against Germany, and was a factor in the United States' declaration of war nearly two years later.

Roger Gauthier was our presenter today and he gave a very informative presentation on the Line 5 pipeline from Enbridge. There is an excellent link on what the issues are and the biggest recommendation is that it should be shut down as it has gone at least 10 years beyond it's life expectancy.

Kent Cartwright and his wife Christina spoke about their adventure in hiking the John Muir Trail last summer which was a 28 day excursion and 238 miles. Quite the adventure and it's amazing that they still speak to each other and live under the same roof.
