Four Way Test:  Thank you Anne McDevitt

Howard Richards was back and led us in “America the Beautiful”

Invocation:  Tim Dykstra shared a thought for the day from Confucius:

          If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed;

          If in terms of ten years, plant trees;

          If in terms of 100 years, teach the people

Calendar winners can be found at:  Link

Song of the Week:  Howard Richards and Steve Cross got things off to a rocking start with Bob Seger’s famous “Old Time Rock and Roll” performed by the Richards/Cross Group supplemented by percussion groupies Angie Cranney and Dibby Smith. Then “Smile” was sung by popular demand

Visiting Rotarians:  Bob Swanson, Birmingham, MI; John Van Etten, Terre Haute, IN; and Lisa Watson, Petoskey Sunrise Rotary. All were most welcome

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Pedaling for Polio:  John Scholten reminded us that he and Kent Cartwright will be participating in the Louisville Ironman. They will be plunging into the Ohio river this Sunday at 8:15. John shared useful advice on snakes and gastrointestinal necessities that we all found useful. Donations can be accepted through October 24th by clicking on this Link or by giving checks (made out to PRCCI) or cash to John Scholten, Kent Cartwright or Gary Baxter. All funds raised will be going towards the Pedaling for Polio Fund. To see the movie highlighting what they will be doing, please click on this: Link

Ironman has a live tracking service for athletes. The tracking is ONLY available on race day. You can go to www.ironman.com and click on ‘Live Coverage’ at the top of the page and select “Ironman Louisville.” Select ‘Athlete Tracker’ and you can search by bib number or last name. This coverage will update as the athletes cross the various timing mats

John Scholten is bib # 2976

Kent Cartwright is bib # 2375

The race begins at 7:30, with Kent and John hitting the water likely around 8 - 8:15. They should both be on the bike course between 10:00 and 4:00. Running should happen between 4:00 and 10:00. The Ironman Live Coverage site is web-based, and there are over 3,000 athletes, so the coverage may be sporadic at times. We believe that John Scholten will get an official drubbing by Kent Cartwright. Las Vegas is betting on Kent Cartwright laughing all the way to the bank and the smart money is on Kent. John may be the boss except on the field of honor

Calendar Sales:  Melissa Thompson reminded us to get our money in by January 11, 2017

Last Thursday:  Steve Cross reminded all of us that First Thursday is “So Yesterday” but everyone wants to know “So what did you do LAST THURSDAY?” Therefore, our more lively members will be meeting on October 27th, 6:30ish at the Pour Public House, 422 E. Mitchell Street

Candidate Forum:  Dennis Kelly informed the club of an upcoming event next Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Iron Horse Café. State and Federal candidates will be in attendance. Presidential candidates have been invited; but have not confirmed availability as of today

PROGRAM

Scott LeDeur, PhD is an instructor of Political Science at NCMC and he presented today’s program on Political trends and their consequences for the 2016 Presidential Election. Historical voting trends by state, age, and ethnicity were shared. Mr. LeDeur reported that over two-thirds of the electorate want change. Both candidates are vying to be that change in the voter’s minds. Both have an opportunity to win by convincing the electorate that they are what voters want and need. He then showed the path to success for both candidates to get the needed 270 electoral votes showing which states were key to watch on election night

Next Week’s Program:  Valerie Myerson, Petoskey Robotics
