ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Great Lakes Chamber Performance:  Sunday, January 18th, 4:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Harbor Springs. The event is Free
 
Foundation Raffle:  See Jane Millar to purchase a ticket for $20.00. This will enable you, as well as the Club, to win $5,000 in the drawing. For the Club to win, 101 tickets need to be sold
 
2016 Paul Harris Fellow Sustaining Member Pool:  This Pool will give you the opportunity to give to the Rotary Foundation on a quarterly basis along with other Rotarians in the Club. Each quarter you will make a $50.00 donation. Once a total of $1,000.00 has accumulated in the pool, one name will be drawn and a Paul Harris Fellow will be designated. For questions contact Chris Etienne; cetienne@bayharbor.com, or pick up a form. All forms should be submitted no later than Wednesday, January 27th, 2016
 
Spaghetti Dinner:  Tickets were distributed today. Please see Mike Snyder if you have not picked them up. Also, let Mike know if you are unable to work on the 11th as work schedules are being developed. Save the Date for February 11, 2016
 
BOWLAPALOOZA:  Save the Date: Friday, March 18, 2016. We have been challenged by the Sunrise Club to form a team and assist them with their goal of collecting $5,000 for local charities
 
Northmen Nights:  See John Scholten to purchase a raffle ticket for $50.00 in order to win an all-terrain vehicle and support Petoskey Sports
 
Calendar Sales:  We are challenged to sell 1500 calendars which will garner a $15,000 profit.  This is the Club’s major fundraiser so please get out there and sell. (Try to sell 2 more if you can!). Envelopes for returns are on the dining tables every week. All stubs and monies must be in by January 16, 2016
 
Presidents Board Report 1/12/2016:  The following bullets are from the board meeting. For more information contact Dave Thomas or any member of the Board:
  • Lorraine Manary is transferring to the Sunrise Club
  • Rob Straebel, Petoskey City Manager's nomination was approved by the Board
  • Members in Arrears – Jim Wibby contacted all in arrears and brought the remaining names to the Board for discussion. Board voted to write off $405.50 of debt for three departed members. A pilot program to make it easier for members to pay was approved and if successful will be brought back to the Board in February
  • Doyle & D&D Funds – It was previously reported that $1,000.00 was donated to wheelchairs and $4.000.00 for STIVE funded by the Doyle Donation and $5,000.00 to restore Director’s budgets funded by D&D profits. The Board voted on Tuesday to use the remaining $5,725.00 of D&D profits to invest in leadership development
  • 2015-2016 Committee matrix was approved as the baseline of our bylaws. Kent Cartwright will lead a spring strategic planning group to chart a 5-year vision for the Club
  • New Membership Process – Nomination review at Podium Board Meetings will not continue. Corporate associates will have the same process as Corporate Member. Graduation will include Sponsor Report
PROGRAM
The first speaker today was Sherie Veramay, Senior Major Gift Officer for Starr Commonwealth. The motto of Starr Commonwealth is "There's no such thing as a bad child." Since 1913, Starr has been dedicated to helping those who need it most. The organization began with children coming to Starr seeking love, support and greater opportunities to reach their potential. Starr is working to expand its services in the areas of community-based, in-home care for children and adults, as well as education and professional training. The second speaker was George Franklin whose topic was “What they didn’t teach you in Business School and what you need to know about Lobbying”.  Drawing from his book, “Raisin Bran and other Cereal Wars: 30 years of Lobbying for the Most Famous Tiger in the World”, Mr. Franklin explained how powerful corporate interests use their lobbyists to wield influence. They impact our daily lives but who are they and how do they operate?
