Member Spotlight: Kendall Klingelsmith
Kendall Klingelsmith discovered his passion for parks and recreation by accident—he enrolled in a recreation class in college by mistake, and the rest is history. After graduating, Kendall quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the youngest Director of a Parks and Recreation Department in Michigan.
Over the years, his career has spanned a wide range of experiences—from working in parks in communities facing serious challenges like gang violence and drug-related incidents, to serving as Executive Director at the Grand Rapids YMCA. He’s even officiated college football!
Kendall moved “home” to Petoskey eight years ago with his wife Carrie, who works at the Manna Food Project, and their two sons. He now serves as Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Petoskey. Kendall loves living in this beautiful area and appreciates the abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. Next year, both of his sons will be playing lacrosse at Aquinas College, and Kendall will officially be an empty nester.
Spaghetti Dinner:
In response to the recent ice storm, we’ve made the Spaghetti Dinner free for the community at the door—pay what you can, if you can. Donations in lieu of tickets will be collected at the door and will benefit the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation Emergency Relief Fund. Extra help is needed for cleanup at the end of the night. If you're working a shift, please consider staying a bit longer to assist! Don't forget to bring a $1 bill for the unofficial "how many people did we serve" pool.
The following sponsors have donated to make this year’s dinner a rousing success: Perry Hotel, McLaren Northern Michigan, AdvisaCare; Home Health and Hospice, Dave Kring Chevrolet QNCD, Taylor Rental, Larson Health, Mitchell Graphics, Joe Blachy Petoskey Real Estate, Bearcub Outfitters, Terry and Betsy Newton, Greenleaf Trust, Brown Motors Petoskey, Walloon Central Marine, Honor Bank, First Community Bank, Preston Feather Building Center, Christian Smith, Michael and Kathy Snyder, Peg and John Emley, Northern Community Mediation, Walt and Nancy Byers, Karen Ragland, Lake Effect Restoration, Keep it Real Social, Neil and Marsha Bidwell for a combined total of $10,250.
Save the Date: April Social Our next Rotary social meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 30 at Tap 94 in the Odawa Casino. Don’t miss it!
PROGRAM:
Joanne Schroeder, Munson Healthcare
Joanne Schroeder shared exciting updates about Munson Healthcare’s regional care transformation, including several major expansions of service.
In Petoskey, Munson will open a new 4,000-square-foot facility this September at the site of the former Art Van store on Anderson Road. The new center will offer primary care, lab testing and blood draws, MRI services, urgent care, and more.
In Gaylord, a new healthcare center is in the works, with a birthing center offering water delivery options, OBGYN services, acute care, and an ICU—all set to open in December 2026.
Additionally, Munson recently opened the Grand Traverse Mental Health Crisis and Access Center in January 2025, offering vital mental health support for the region.
