International Insight:  One-third of the fruits, vegetables, meat, and other food rots unharvested in fields, spoils in storage, or sits forgotten in the back of the refrigerator. The Rotary Clubs of Bucaramanga Nuevo Milenio, Colombia, and Woodland Hills, California, have partnered with food wholesaler Centroabastos (Bucaramanga, Columbia, to establish a center to use surplus produce to provide training in safe food handling and processing.   The project is expected to reduce food waste by 15% while also creating employment opportunities.

PROGRAM:  Jeniffer Wixson, NCMC Childcare Initiative

North Central Michigan College’s childcare initiative is a comprehensive effort to support the needs of families in the region by providing accessible, affordable, and high-quality childcare services. Recognizing the critical role that reliable childcare plays in enabling parents to pursue education and employment, the college has developed a program that caters to students, faculty, and community members alike.

The initiative is designed to create a nurturing environment where children can thrive, offering early childhood education and development programs that prepare young learners for future academic success. By integrating this initiative into the campus community, the college is not only helping to alleviate the burden of childcare costs but also promoting a balanced and supportive environment for parents pursuing their academic and professional goals.

This initiative reflects North Central Michigan College’s broader commitment to community engagement and student success, ensuring that education is accessible to all by addressing one of the most significant challenges facing working families today.
