PROGRAM:

Izabela Babinska and Laura Daniel joined us from McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation. They gave us an update on McLaren's Behavioral Health Center in Cheboygan.

  • There's a growing national mental health crisis - made worse by COVID-19 pandemic

  • There's a declining access to care - shortage of mental health professionals

  • Michigan ranks 3rd worst for severity of shortage.

  • Of 2,287 adult inpatient psychiatric beds, only 35 beds are located in the 22-county region of northern Michigan.

2 years ago, McLaren was awarded a $3 million grant to start a behavioral health program on its Cheboygan campus. The Cheboygan campus was once a full-fledged hospital that closed in 2011. McLaren started renovating that building. It is creating an 18-bed inpatient unit - the Justin A. Borra Behavioral Health Center. They also plan to open up psychiatric, psychologist, and social worker offices for outpatient care. They have been aggressively recruiting psychiatrists.

The Justin A. Borra Behavioral Center is scheduled to open Spring 2023.

The second phase of this project will involve additional renovation of the campus to add a further 12 beds and an expanded Emergency Department, as well as an EMPATH Unit (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment and Healing Unit). Place for people to de-escalate.

The total cost of both phases is $24 million. McLaren has raised $22.5 million so far!
