PROGRAM: Anne-Elise Mair - Dyslexia Institute in Harbor Springs
Founded in 1982, the Michigan Dyslexia Institute, Inc. (MDI) was the first nonprofit educational organization in Michigan focused expressly on raising awareness about dyslexia and focusing on the needs of persons affected by it. MDI has been a leader in training educators to provide effective instruction to students through use of the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
They have also provided one-on-one, individualized instruction to thousands of children and adults via five regional centers throughout Michigan. MDI is funded by a combination of grants, donations and fees for service programs. They work diligently to raise funds to provide scholarships to students who may not otherwise be able to afford the cost of instruction.
Some interesting facts we learned today:
Formerly thought to affect males more than females, recent studies show dyslexia affects both equally.
Left-handedness and ADHD are often associated with dyslexia.
The MDI serves all ages - their oldest client is 72!
Dyslexia impacts one out of five people (20%)
Dyslexia is viewed in schools as a "learning disability" but has no effect on intelligence. Individuals with dyslexia often excel in math and fields such as architecture, engineering, and web design/tech.
The Michigan Dyslexia Institute is a non-profit, they do not receive government funding, so they operate with donations and grants.
