10 Commandments for Peace of Mind

Thou shalt not worry –

Most of the things we worry about never happen.

Thou shalt not try to cross bridges before coming to them –

It simply can’t be done.

Thou shalt face each problem as it comes –

You can only handle one at a time anyway.

Thou shalt not take problems to bed with thee –

They make very poor bedfellows.

Thou shalt not try to relive yesterday –

Just live for today.

Thou shalt not carry a grudge –

It is a worthless thing, and a terribly heavy load.

Thou shalt not hate –

Nothing is more damaging to the heart.

Thou shalt look for goodness –

Beauty and truth are all around.

Thou shalt listen for wisdom –

Almost everyone has a valuable lesson to teach.

Thou shalt count they blessings –

The more we treasure them, the faster they multiply.

Rotary Care List:

Matt Breed on his son Jake:

It has been a long week, but things are looking much better now.  When Jake was brought off the ventilator and regained consciousness, he was able to explain that he slipped on ice and hit his head hard on the sidewalk as he was walking back into Bear Cub. So the Reader’s Digest version is a traumatic brain injury (4 small brain bleeds) from a fall. They are hopeful of a full recovery but for now he needs some therapy.

Update from Tim Kaufman:

"Things are looking up. Doctors removed my pic line and IV antibiotics on 12/21. I am moving around the house, bearing about 75% of my weight with a walker. Hopefully by the end of the month, I am getting around pretty good.

Thanks to  everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers.”

Update from John Stover via Marilyn (his wife)

"We are leaving for North Carolina on Jan 11, for further medical treatment for John, and to see some sunshine.

John misses his friends at Rotary but isn’t good at doing Zoom meetings.

We hope you had a nice Christmas and wish you all the best for 2021."

Volunteer with McLaren on Mondays:  McLaren Northern Michigan seeks our help to provide blue plastic hospital isolation gowns to hospital staff, which protect them when they go into isolation rooms. The gowns are manufactured locally by Petoskey Plastics. They arrive as rolls, with perforations. They need to be torn off the roll and folded. McLaren is asking Noon Rotarians to please volunteer on Mondays at the Hospital Foundation (which is a totally separate building from the hospital itself.) Small groups of people (5 is ideal) are needed for two-hour shifts. Each person will be placed at a "gown station" to tear and fold gowns. Before entering the Hospital Foundation, everyone will be screened for COVID symptoms and issued a hospital mask. This is a volunteer opportunity for adults only, particularly adults who are comfortable with physical movement. Please contact Tami Frampus at 231-487-7128 if you are interested in signing up for a time slot with names of the people in your group or if you have any questions.

Calendar update:  91% of calendar sales turned in, which translates into $15,780 profit for our club. Thank you, Rotarians!! We still have about 10 members who need to turn in calendar money. You may drop off your calendar money to three locations: (1) Mail it to our club at PO Box 61, Petoskey, MI 49770. (2) Drop it off at Harbor/Brenn office, across the street from Culver's. There is a mail slot in the front door to slide your money through. (3) Drop it off at Karen Ragland's home. Please contact her first!

Program

Today's program featured an overview of the various initiatives and activities that our club has planned for this year, our 100th anniversary.

Kassia Perpich:  leading a "100 Acts of Service" campaign. Every member of this club is challenged to reflect on our motto, "Service Above Self," and do at least one act of service this year that goes above-and-beyond what they normally do. It doesn't have to be a big or complex or expensive gesture -- just something that embodies Service Above Self, in honor of our 100th anniversary. We would like to record and report on these acts throughout the year. Kassia will create a form for members to fill out.

Jim Wibby:  leading programming to be done by past Club Presidents. Starting in February, one of our 18 past presidents will give highlights of what was happening with Rotary in particular years.

Liz Ahrens:  leading our Centennial Service Project, which is fundraising for upgrades to the Winter Sports Park. Liz was unable to be at this week's meeting, so we will have her share an update next week. She and Ashley Whitney recently met with Kendall Klinglesmith, the Parks & Recreation Director for Petoskey, to discuss logistics.

Nikki Devitt:  leading our Centennial Gala. Save the date!! It will be held Thursday, November 4 from 5:00 - 9:00 PM at the Perry Hotel. We want this gala to be very celebratory and also have an affordable ticket price so it can be enjoyed by many.

Chris Etienne:  leading an international service project for our club. Chris noted that the incoming Rotary International President will be announcing his initiatives/focus areas next month, so she would like to receive that information and tie an international service project to those. Stay tuned!

Jean Frentz and Bob Metzger:  leading monthly programs to highlight our Club's history. They've been going through boxes of archival materials. To kick us off, Bob dove into a FABULOUS presentation about the 18 men who founded our club, 100 years ago. It was awesome to learn a little bit about them and their many contributions to the community in addition to Rotary. You will recognize some of their surnames, some of which are still connected with buildings, streets, properties, etc. The 18 men who founded Rotary were:

Henry Fredrick Beese – dry goods retailer

Chalmers Curtis – banker

Morgan Curtis – brother of Chalmers, stone quarry owner.

George Danser – wholesale grocer

Ralph D. Engle – doctor

John L. Galster – cement manufacturer

Charles J. Gray – dentist

Benjamin H. Halstead – lawyer

Guy R. Hankey – mill owner

Dana Harry Hinkley – newspaper owner

John A. Lake – grocer retailer

Park G. Lantz – superintendent

George W. McCabe – hardware store partner

William G. McCune – insurance agent

George Stanley Rice – leather manufacturer

Budd M. Salisbury – shoe store owner

Homer Sly – automobile dealer

Norman W. Wells – coal dealer

Next Week’s Program:  George Robson – Bath School Bombing May 1927

Parting Shots:  Howard Richards closed with 1937 Rogers & Hart “Lady & the Tramp”

She gets too hungry, for dinner at eight (I am starving)
She loves the theater, but she never comes late
I never bother, with people that I hate
That's why this chick is a tramp

She doesn't like crap games, with barons and earls
Won't go to Harlem, in ermines and pearls
And I definitely won't dish out dirt, with the rest of those girls (Thank-you)
That's why the lady is a tramp

I love the free, fresh wind in my hair
Life without care, oh I'm so broke, it's old
I hate California, it's crowded and damp
That's why the lady is a tramp (I am a tramp)

Sometimes I go to Coney Island, oh the beach is divine
And I love the Yankees, Jeeter's just fine
I follow Rogers and Heart, she sings every line
That's why the lady is a tramp

I love a prizefight, that isn't a fake (no fakes)
I love to row boat with you and your wife on Central Park lake
She goes to Opera and stays wide awake (yes, I do)
That's why this lady is a tramp

She likes the green (green) grass (grass) under her shoes
What can I lose, 'cause I got no dough (oh no?)
I'm all alone when I lower my lamp
That's why the lady is a tramp

Go!

I love your free fresh, I love your handkerchief in my hair
Life without care, but I am so broke, that's oak
Hates California it's cold and it's damp
That's why the lady is a tramp
That's why this lady is a tramp
That's why the lady is a tramp
