“The Peace of Wild Things” Wendell Berry
When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

PROGRAM: Masonic Lodge Neil Ahrens
This week’s Rotary meeting gave members a unique opportunity to step inside one of Petoskey’s historic landmarks — the Masonic Temple. We toured the building, learned about the history of the Masons in Petoskey, and gained insight into the values of brotherhood, personal growth, and service that continue to shape the organization today.
Originally purchased and converted for use in 1910, the building has long served as a gathering place for members dedicated to supporting one another, giving back to the community, and strengthening the fraternity. At its peak, membership reached nearly 300, and in early Petoskey, “anyone who was anyone” was a Mason. Today, the lodge continues its mission with approximately 20 active members who remain committed to raising each other up and living as “an officer and a gentleman.”
It was a meaningful afternoon reflecting on Petoskey’s history, the importance of community organizations, and the lasting impact of service-driven brotherhoods.
