Howard Richards led us in My Country Tis of Thee

Four Way Test:  Reg Smith

Invocation:  Neil Bidwell

“Many, many millions in the world today are hungry. It’s not your fault, but you woke up from a warm bed, you were able to have a shower, you put on clean clothes, and you were in a home that is warm in the winter. Now just think of the many who are refugees who wake up in the morning, and there’s not very much protection for them against the rain that is pelting down. Perhaps there is no warmth or food or even just water. It is to say in a way, yes, it is to say really, you do want to count your blessings.”
― Dalai Lama XIV, The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World

Singing/Song:  Howard Richards led us in “It's a Beautiful Day in The Neighborhood” and “Smile”

Program:  Pete Wallin from Emmet County Sheriff’s Department

Sheriff Pete Wallin has been law enforcement since 1981. He was first appointed sheriff in 2002. He gave a great overview of what the Sheriff’s Department is mandated by law to do: from operating the county jail (which can hold up to 103 prisoners) and enforcing county ordinances—to removing people with infectious diseases and investigating animal cruelty. However, they are not charged with managing stray cats. Sorry, friends!

Sheriff Wallin gave us a bit of history, including a story of when county prisoners used to be allowed to go home for Christmas, as long as they agreed to return!!

The Sheriff’s Department has 48 full-time and 3 part-time employees, plus many kind volunteers who staff the Victim Services Unit

Next Week’s Program:  Tory Thrush from Char-Em Career Technical Education
