Life Events: Christine Hammond has just been approved for the new medicine that has been successful in extending the lives by a few months for some pancreatic cancer patients. The club continues to build excitement around the Great Grocery Giveaway Raffle. Members interested in joining the raffle sales team are encouraged to connect with Andrea Coronado or Sharon Shappacher to learn how they can help make this year's fundraiser a success. August 26 is our new raffle launch.
Save the Date – Upcoming Rotary Events – North Central Michigan College is pleased to host the August 19 Noon Rotary Club meeting. We will meet in the Student Commons of the Borra Learning Center (this is the long building just off the main parking lot – please enter in the middle doors). A fun presentation that highlights the unique history of the college and then showcases the varied learning opportunities today (and soon) will be presented. Guests are encouraged. The 2026 Hand-Bell concert will take place on Thursday, August 13 at 7:30pm in the John M. Hall Auditorium. We would be delighted to have you join us! Admission is free with a special offering taken to benefit the Bay View Summer Music Academy Scholarship Fund. Our own Dibby Smith is performing in it.

Hosted by Rotarian Liz McKenney Join the Northmen Food Den for Adult Prom: Masquerade on Saturday, August 15 at the Grand Unity Event Center in Petoskey from 5:00 to 11:00 PM. This fun evening invites guests to relive the magic of prom with grown-up flair and includes signature cocktails, appetizers and a buffet dinner by Sweetwater Catering, a live auction, photo booth, and Prom King and Queen voting. PROGRAM: Dr. Aaron Brown, McLaren, Prostate Awareness Month
Our speaker today was Dr. Aaron Brown, Stacy’s husband, talking about Prostate Awareness Month in September. McLaren is hosting two free clinics for men to get screened… Sept 3 in Cheboygan, and Sept 10 from 5-8:00 at Karmanos in Petoskey. It would be helpful if you made an appointment prior to showing up. Please pass the word to others, Dr. Brown highlighted what he does in treating prostate cancer, and how extensive the McLaren team is in diagnosing and creating the best treatment plan. He emphasized that ‘our services punch above our weight class’, as we have multiple options and a large team in spite of being a rural hospital. Today, prostate cancer is one of the top 5 cancers, and, except for skin cancer, is the most common in men. One in eight men will develop it, and just like many other cancers, there is a wide spectrum of aggressiveness. Treatments can include active surveillance, surgery (often lapriscopy), hormone therapy, radiation, and immunotherapy/targeted chemo, depending on the age of the patient, cause and degree of aggressiveness of the cancer. Be informed, and get tested.
